This is the first edition of a weekly Dequency newsletter. Subscribe to be the first to hear about product releases, airdrops, coin news (👀), and other important (and frivolous) updates.

Dequency Fam,

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes: tweaking our closed beta, minting one-off licenses, and writing a few job descriptions (we’re looking for a Community Lead and a Head of NFT, for starters…).

Wanted to take a moment to collect our thoughts and give you all an update on where we’re at product-wise and what’s on the horizon. Plug in your amp, put your stunna shades on… the show’s about to start.

Who even ARE YOU?

First of all, if you’re just getting to know us (hi!), here’s a little bit more about what we do & why we’re doing it:

So… what’s next?

Without revealing too much, we’re heading into this next season with some ~*~ more resources ~*~ and getting ready to open up our beta to the world.

Beta Days Ahead

The Dequency beta (target launch date: Feb 14… cute, right?) will feature a small, hand-picked music catalog to start, and will allow visual NFT artists to mint a synchronization license on the blockchain. We’re really excited about this because it’s the first system that allows on-chain visual content producers and NFT artists to mint a sync license on the blockchain.

Additionally, we’ll have the capability for licensees to connect their crypto wallets and pay with cryptocurrency. If you don’t know how to do that, just email me your seed phrase at margaret@dequency.io and I’ll do it for you 😈…. (kidding. Please, don’t do that).

Why Is This Cool?

One of the most exciting things about this launch is that we’re able to realize the benefit of being on-chain: the music rights holders will get paid INSTANTLY — unheard of in the music industry. Any other online license systems out there take 30%-50%; Dequency will only take a 10% fee, leaving 90% to the rights holders.

This represents a huge step towards more artists being able to make a living off of their work. As the market for online visual art (eg NFTs) grows, the addressable market for musical art grows meaningfully via sync. We’re providing a platform to make it even easier to collaborate with, and benefit from, this explosion of artists entering the space.

Okay, Then What? Wen v1?

Future iterations of the platform (read: v1) will include:

-The ability for music rightsholders to make their music available to be licensed (avoiding centralized control). The sheer amount of emails we get from folks wanting to license music with us… it’s staggering. Trust us, we’re working

-Community filtering and curating of the music catalog to make the search experience more relevant and effective

-We’ll be minting a utility/governance token (don’t worry guys; it’s the same token)

-Contests and games to promote collaboration between music and visuals

Other Fun Stuff

Since you’ve made it this far, I wanted to run something by y’all: which CuBe do you like better? We’ve iterating on our logo and I’d love feedback — go respond to this tweet and LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD, TASTEMAKER!

Seriously, thanks for being along for the ride. Okay, back to building.

-Team Dequency
